Our fantastic internship student Jenny highlights her findings in a great poster presentation

hannahnorawolf

We are excited to highlight the work of Jenny Schnabelmaier, a dedicated student who recently completed her internship with us. Jenny's project focused on detecting complement factor H and its variants in the serum of post-stroke delirium patients, an important area of research in understanding and potentially mitigating stroke-related complications.

Complement factor H (FH) is a regulatory protein within the complement system. FH helps control inflammation and protects host tissue by preventing the activation of the complement pathway on host cells. Variants in FH have been linked to diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). Jenny's research aimed to explore FH's role in post-stroke delirium, a condition that affects recovery and quality of life in stroke patients.

Jenny was the first person to implement the use of lateral flow assays in our lab. She tested lateral flow assays recently engineered by our Scifimed cooperation partner, Microcoat. These assays can detect FHR-2, FHR-3, and FHR-4. Jenny even implemented the evaluation of the lateral flow assays with a measuring device to quantify the positive bands.

It is always very important to us that internship students at our lab do not only gain more experience in hands-on lab work, but we also want to pass on additional skills like poster presentations. Jenny set up an informative, well curated and clear poster highlighting all of her most important findings during her 8-week internship. We always hope to be a safe space for firsts - just like Jenny's first poster presentation. She presented her data in a calm and structured manner and we all enjoyed listening to and discussing about it!

We wish Jenny all the best in her future studies and hope her thumbs recover from pipetting so many ELISAs ;). Thank you Jenny for your hard work and your company in the lab!

Hannah
